It is colorless crystal with strong deliquescence and highly soluble in water. It normally exists as hexahydrate containing six crystal water molecules, namely MgCl₂·6H₂O. It will lose crystal water when heated to 95°C. Decomposition occurs above 135°C with hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas released. Pure magnesium chloride flakes are colorless monoclinic crystals, while industrial products are usually yellowish brown, containing about 30%–50% magnesium chloride as well as impurities such as magnesium sulfate and other chlorides, with a bitter and astringent taste. It dissolves easily in water and ethanol and deliquesces rapidly under high humidity.

.Metallurgical Industry: It is applied to manufacture refractory materials and binders for furnace walls, and acts as raw material for No.2 flux and smelting metallic magnesium.

.Chemical Industry: Mainly used to produce various magnesium salts including magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate, and also serves as raw material for antifreezing agents.

.Building Materials: Mixed with caustic magnesia (MgO), it forms hard and corrosion-resistant magnesia cement, which can be processed into artificial marble, magnesia tiles, floor slabs, ceiling panels, decorative boards, fireproof boards, greenhouse supports, partition boards, magnesia manhole covers, bathtubs, door and window frames, prefabricated houses and other products.

.Machinery Industry: Magnesia composites made with magnesium chloride can be made into mechanical packaging boxes, triangular buffer blocks, furniture, etc., which is an ideal material to replace traditional wood and plastic.

.Food Industry: Tofu coagulated by brine (aqueous magnesium chloride solution) tastes tender and delicious compared with gypsum-coagulated tofu. It is also used as an additive in certain foods.

.Transportation Industry: Used as road deicing and snow melting agent. It melts ice rapidly with low corrosion to vehicles and performs better than sodium chloride.

.Pharmaceutical Industry: Dried brine refined from magnesium chloride can be used for pharmaceutical purposes.

.Agriculture: It can be used to produce magnesium fertilizer, potassium-magnesium compound fertilizer and cotton defoliant.

Comprehensive supplementary application: It is the raw material for manufacturing various magnesium salts in chemical industry, protein coagulant in food processing and defoliant in agriculture. Besides, it can be adopted as fire retardant for coal mines and dust suppressant for roads.
