Its aqueous solution hydrolyzes to show alkalinity and has certain corrosivity. It can undergo neutralization reaction with acids to generate corresponding salts and release carbon dioxide. It can decompose at high temperatures to produce sodium oxide and carbon dioxide.

1.The glass industry is the largest consumer of soda ash, with 0.2 tons of soda ash consumed per ton of glass produced.

2.It acts as a buffer, neutralizer and dough improver, applicable to pastries and flour-based foods, to be used in appropriate amounts according to production requirements.

3.It serves as a detergent for wool rinsing, pharmaceutical raw material, and alkaline agent in leather tanning.

4.In drilling operations, soda ash reduces the fluid loss of fresh drilling fluid while increasing its viscosity and gel strength.

5.Applied in the pharmaceutical industry as an antacid and osmotic laxative.

6.Used as a water softener in the printing and dyeing industry.

7.Anhydrous sodium carbonate is adopted for chemical and electrochemical degreasing, chemical copper plating, aluminum etching, electrolytic polishing of aluminum and its alloys, chemical oxidation of aluminum, sealing after phosphating, inter-process rust prevention, electrolytic stripping of chromium coatings and chromium oxide films, etc. It is also added to electrolytes for pre-copper plating, steel plating and iron alloy plating.

8.In the leather-making industry, it degreases raw hides, neutralizes chrome-tanned leather and raises the alkalinity of chrome tanning liquor.

9.Light soda ash can be used as a filler in rubber manufacturing.

10.Water treatment: The lime-soda ash method softens water. Lime removes carbonate hardness in water, while soda ash eliminates non-carbonate hardness.

11.Food-grade soda ash is used to produce carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC).

12.By-product soda ash is utilized to manufacture sodium silicate. Also known as water glass, sodium silicate is made by co-fusing silica sand and soda ash (or natural alkali) in melting furnaces, followed by cooling and crushing. Coal, natural gas or coal gas can be used as fuel.

13.Adding soda ash to cement mortar mainly accelerates early strength development and activates slag admixtures. Excessive dosage will lead to low later-stage mortar strength.

14.Soda ash is used to produce sodium fluoride crystals. The soda ash-based sodium fluoride production process features readily available raw materials, short technological flow, low investment, zero three-waste emissions and low equipment corrosion.

15. Supplementary applications of food-grade soda ash: 

(1)Lye, also known as edible alkaline water, is a compound food additive widely used in food processing. It is a traditional auxiliary material for Cantonese-style pastries and frequently added when preparing dough for Cantonese mooncake crusts.

(2)In line with national standards for mooncakes, lye is an essential ingredient for manufacturing Cantonese mooncakes, representing its distinctive production technique.

(3)It is an alkaline mixture formulated with potassium carbonate and sodium carbonate as main components, supplemented by carbonates or polyphosphates.

16. Soda ash is applied in papermaking. It plays a vital role in pulping. In chemical pulping, soda ash works as a buffer to dissolve lignin and separate cellulose for pulp making. Papermaking separates lignin from cellulose in wood. Lignin features a complex and stable phenylpropane structure that resists decomposition. Under alkaline conditions, lignin forms methylquinone structures with conjugated double bonds, facilitating subsequent lignin dissolution and removal.

17. Soda ash is used to make enamel frits. Enamel frits are glass-like substances formed by mixing silicate rock powder with soda ash and pigments, heating to melt, then cooling for solidification. Similar to glass, they have a lower melting point and poorer transparency (some are opaque), and are used to make tableware and handicrafts.
