1.Distinguish different grades; do not mixuse them
Industrialgrade Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate: MgCl₂ ≥ 46%. Applied in building materials, deicing, dust suppression and water treatment. Must not be used for food purposes, with relatively loose heavymetal limits.
Foodgrade: SC food production license is mandatory. Heavy metals such as lead and arsenic are strictly restricted. It is only used for bean products and food additives, and its price is much higher than industrialgrade.
(3) Anhydrous Magnesium Chloride: MgCl₂ ≥ 99%. Extremely hygroscopic, requiring highly airtight packaging, with much higher cost.
2.Check physical forms (flakes / powder / prills)
White flakes (acidprocess): Clear solution with low impurities. First choice for export, suitable for magnesite building materials and export orders.
Ordinary flakes / refined flakes (openpot evaporation): Yellowish color with high sulfate and calcium impurities, low price. Only suitable for deicing and dust suppression. Not recommended for magnesite products, as halogenreturn is highly likely to occur.
(3) Powder: Fast dissolution but heavy dust. Prilled granules: Good flowability and low dust, suitable for mechanical spreading and automatic feeding.
3.Essential key specifications
Key parameters for Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate (brine flakes):
MgCl₂ content ≥ 46.0%
Sulfate (SO₄²⁻) ≤ 1.0%: Strict control is required for buildingmaterial applications. Excess sulfate will cause halogenreturn and product failure.
Calcium ion (Ca²⁺) ≤ 0.15%
Waterinsoluble matter ≤ 0.1%: No large amount of precipitate after dissolution.
(5) Appearance: White / translucent crystals without severe caking. Dissolution test: aqueous solution shall be clear and transparent; turbid solution indicates excessive impurities.
4.Packaging & Storage
(1) Standard packing: 25 kg woven bags with PE inner liner, or jumbo bags. PE inner plastic liner is mandatory! Magnesium chloride is highly hygroscopic. Broken bags or bags without inner liner will absorb moisture during sea transport and cake severely, rendering the product unusable. (2) Seagoing export: Ensure moistureproof treatment inside containers. Avoid loading in rainy seasons, otherwise deliquescence and caking may occur upon arrival at destination port.
